African Cities Lab est une plateforme africaine d'éducation numérique initialement lancée par EPFL et dont l'objectif est de contribuer au développement urbain durable en #Afrique en créant un réseau d'institutions dans le domaine de l'éducation numérique et ayant un impact sur l'ensemble du continent.
Cinq autres universités, judicieusement réparties sur le continent, sont d’ores et déjà partie prenante : l’Université Mohammed VI polytechnique au Maroc, l’Université de Cape Town en Afrique du Sud, l’Université de Carthage, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) au Ghana et l’Université du Rwanda.
Leurs compétences seront mises à disposition pour la production des MOOCs, en français et en anglais. Pionnière de la création et diffusion de MOOCs en Europe et déjà reconnue en Afrique par son programme MOOCs for Africa, l’EPFL bénéficie pour ce projet d’un soutien financier du SECO à hauteur de 2,65 millions de francs suisses pour la première phase, qui durera 2 ans et demi.
« L’objectif d’African Cities Lab est de contribuer à un développement urbain durable en Afrique, grâce à des cours en ligne et des offres de formation continue pour les professionnels », résume Silvio Giroud, chargé de programme au SECO. « Ce projet est le bienvenu car la thématique du développement urbain revêt une importance significative pour le SECO.»
African Cities Lab is an African digital education platform initially launched by EPFL which aim to contribute to sustainable urban development in Africa by creating a network of institutions in the field of digital education.
The platform will be run by local project managers across the continent with the assistance of EPFL. Five other universities have already agreed to take part in the initiative: Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Morocco, the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the University of Carthage in Tunisia, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana and the University of Rwanda.
These universities were carefully selected so as to span the entire African continent, and will provide the skills needed to develop the MOOCs in French and English. EPFL is a pioneer in developing MOOCs for Europe, and its MOOCs for Africa program is already widely known on that continent. The School will receive CHF 2.65 million in funding from SECO for the first phase of the project, which is scheduled to run for two-and-a-half years.
“Our goal with the African Cities Lab is to promote sustainable urban development through a combination of online courses and continuing education programs,” says Silvio Giroud, the project manager at SECO. “And we’re happy to see this initiative come to fruition, because urban development is an important issue for us at SECO.”
